Dr. Carroll also served as an Associate Professor of Radiology, and Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He found the intensive care work totally fascinating, and totally exhausting. Though he could almost always figure out what was going on, he found fixing it much harder, so he switched to nuclear medicine in order to spend his time figuring out the underlying physiology and pathology. Fascinated by the complexities of brain physiology for his entire professional career, nearly a quarter of Dr. Carroll's 50 publications have been on brain topics. Five years ago he decided to restrict his practice to positron emission topography of the brain, after noting that 15 to 20 percent of the patients referred to him for evaluation of Alzheimer's vs. frontotemporal dementia actually had unsuspected traumatic brain damage, sometimes in addition to Alzheimer's. "It made a tremendous difference in the lives of these patients to know that they needed rehabilitation, not long term institutionalization," says Dr. Carroll.
