After years of dealing with the ravages of “accelerated aging” as demonstrated by early myocardial infarction, stroke, amputation of extremities, and kidney failure due to uncontrolled diabetes, she decided to change the focus of her professional career to that of preventative and integrative medicine. She furthered her education by obtaining a Masters Degree in Primary Health Care from the University of Rhode Island and has done post-graduate work in pharmacology, diabetes care, functional medicine, and anti-aging medicine. In 1996, as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Nursing at Yale University, she became involved with the Yale Pediatric Endocrine Clinic, which was receiving an overwhelming number of referrals for obesity, pre-diabetes, and new onset Type 2 diabetes (thought not to occur in children). Her new passion became a focus on the genetic and environmental factors that were mainly responsible to this “new epidemic” of obesity and Metabolic/Insulin Resistance Syndrome. She founded Health Quest International, focused on providing care to children internationally, and also lectured nationally on the topic of early identification of Insulin Resistance Syndrome in children and young adults and the need for nutritional interventions. In 2001, she founded CT Holistic and Integrative Medicine with colleague Jordan Goetz, M.D. in Groton, CT. She now serves as Clinical Director for the practice, which specializes in prevention and treatment of diabetes, weight management through underlying factors that contribute to weight loss resistance, bio-identical hormonal balancing, and targeted amino acid therapy for neurotransmitter dysregulation. Also, for the past 22 years she has run the Groton Senior Health Clinic, a town-funded weekly program that provides senior citizen physical exams including a yearly preventative health care evaluation and treatment plan. She has been able to observe the beneficial outcomes of a healthy lifestyle and anti-aging interventions as “her” seniors in their 80s and 90s are still skiing, dancing, and volunteering their services at local nursing homes, without need of any pharmaceutical assistance.

Henry E. Young, Ph.D.
Professor of Anatomy, Division of Basic Medical Sciences, Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon, GA
Henry E. Young, Ph.D., is a Tenured Full Professor of Anatomy in the Division of Basic Medical Sciences and has adjunct Full Professor appointments in the Departments of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon, GA. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1974 with a B.S. in Biology, from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 1977 with an M.S. in Zoology, and from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock in 1983 with a Ph.D. in Anatomy. He then went to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and did a postdoctoral fellowship in carbohydrate biochemistry, 1983-1987. His first academic appointment was as an Instructor of Biochemistry at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, IL, 1987-1988, where he supervised their Hybridoma facility for generating antibodies against particular carbohydrate protein epitopes. He joined the faculty of Mercer University School of Medicine in 1988 as an Assistant Professor of Anatomy in the Division of Basic Medical Sciences. His research interests began in his Master’s program and centered on the role of endogenous stem cells and factors that control their response during tissue repair and tissue regeneration. His Master’s and Ph.D. research encompassed limb regeneration in adult terrestrial salamanders. This is where he made his initial discovery in 1975. Adult regenerating salamander limb blastema was composed of activated, previously quiescent, stem cells as well as factors that controlled their differentiation. Since joining Mercer’s faculty he discovered, and was the first to clone from a single cell, adult-derived germ layer lineage mesodermal stem cells (GL-MesoSCs, a single cell that can form any cell of mesodermal origin). Next, he discovered, and was the first to clone from a single cell, adult-derived pluripotent epiblastic-like stem cells (ELSCs, a single cell that can to form any somatic body cell of ectodermal, mesodermal, or endodermal origin). He next discovered, and was the first to clone from a single cell, an adult-derived totipotent blastomere-like (and by default, pluripotent) stem cell (BLSCs, a single cell that can form all somatic cells of the body, the gametes [sperm and ova], and the placenta). While skeletal muscle has been his “gold standard” for isolating these stem cells, his lab was recently able to isolate these same stem cells in fairly pure form circulating within the peripheral blood of ten species of adult mammals, including humans. Thus far, they can isolate autologous adult stem cells from mouse, rat, cat, dog, sheep, goat, pig, cow, horse, and human. His current research focuses on the capabilities of the adult-derived stem cells to facilitate tissue repair and tissue regeneration in humans and other mammals. Dr. Young has received numerous research and teaching awards throughout his career, has 162 published citations (51 articles and 118 abstracts), 14 United States and International Patents awarded or pending, and 203 invited presentations pertaining to his work with adult stem cells.
