Consultant, Men’s Health Issues, Member, Life Extension Scientific Advisory Board
Bone density often is viewed as a minor problem for men. In reality, bone integrity (a more comprehensive term) is of foundational significance in understanding the status of multiple tissue systems—not limited to only bone formation and resorption, but also extending to issues of integrity of the vascular, neurologic and renal systems. Learn about the physiologic aspects of bone formation and resorption as well as the laboratory and imaging tools to assess the individual patient. Discover the importance of using QCT to measure bone density in men versus the so-called “gold standard” using DEXA. Dr. Strum will guide you in the use of biologic endpoints to understand if goals for improving bone integrity are being achieved. The discussion will also focus on the treatment of bone loss and the ramifications of bone loss in alerting the astute clinician of problems almost certain to exist in the cardiovascular system—as well as possible compromise to brain and renal function.

Stephen B. Strum, M.D., FACP
Affiliation, Ashland Community Hospital, Ashland, OR
Consultant, Men’s Health Issues, Member, Life Extension Scientific Advisory Board
There is agreement in the medical literature that TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy) does not cause prostate cancer (PC). However, TRT is a risk factor for stimulating already existing, but undiagnosed, PC. Dr. Strum walks you through the hormonal axis as it relates to prostate health and the implications of using androgen replacement therapy.  Learn how men planning to receive TRT should be evaluated at baseline and during TRT.  This detailed discussion will cover issues such as estrogen excess due to aromatization of testosterone and the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) due to high levels of testosterone obtained during TRT.  Solutions to these issues will be presented—as well as additional information on HGH and HCG and their interactions in the hormonal axis of men.

Tai Chi Workshop
Arthur Rosenfeld
Martial Arts Master & Teacher, Pompano, FL
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for this “energy” moving workshop. Tai chi is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. A person doing tai chi moves his body slowly and gently, while breathing deeply and meditating. (Tai chi is sometimes called "moving meditation.") Many practitioners believe tai chi helps the flow throughout the body of a proposed vital energy called “qi.”  In traditional Chinese medicine, the vital energy or life force is said to regulate a person's spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health and be influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang. Tai chi is used in the United States for health purposes, as part of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Regular practice improves muscular strength, flexibility and overall fitness.

Drug Nutrient Depletion
Derrick M. DeSilva, Jr., M.D.
Medical Teaching Faculty, John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Edison, NJ
Attending Physician/Co-Chair Department of Complimentary Medicine, Raritan Bay Medical Center
More than ever, patients over the age of 50 are on some type of pharmaceutical drug regimen, many of which promote healthier, longer lives. Unfortunately, many of these drugs also deplete vital nutrients from the body. Women in particular are known to have drug-induced nutrient depletion related to oral contraceptives, which lower the levels of vital nutrients such as vitamins B2, B6 and B12; vitamin C; folic acid; magnesium and zinc. Drugs can alter the body’s ability to digest, absorb, synthesize, transport, store, metabolize or eliminate nutrients—which leads to nutrient depletion. Quite often, a patient then is placed on additional medication to combat a new set of symptoms. The cascading effect of this disease-management approach often leads to a reduced quality of life.

The Role of Hormonorestorative Therapy in Hypercholesterolemia Treatment
Sergey A. Dzugan, M.D., Ph.D.
CEO, Fountain Institute, Deerfield Beach, FL
Join Dr. Dzugan as he investigates the role of hormonorestorative therapy (HT) in hypercholesterolemia treatment. A new hypothesis concerning the association of low levels of steroid hormones and hypercholesterolemia was previously proposed. This presentation analyzes the results of a study that includes 73 patients with hypercholesterolemia: All patients were treated by hormonorestorative therapy with bioidentical hormones, which included a combination of several agents such as pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), triestrogen, progesterone and testosterone; 100% of the patients responded. Mean serum total cholesterol (TC) was 252.0 mg/dL before and 192.8 mg/dL after treatment. Serum TC dropped below 200 mg/dL in 61.6%.  The result of this study shows that concurrent restoration to youthful levels of multiple, normally found steroid hormones is an effective treatment method able to normalize or improve serum total cholesterol.

4:45 pm - 5:45 pm
Optimizing Thyroid Function for Health & Well-Being
Neal Rouzier, M.D.
Director, The Preventive Medicine Clinics of the Desert, Palm Springs, CA
Treating hypothyroidism is one of the simplest and easiest tasks for a physician. Just prescribe a T4 preparation until the TSH falls into the normal range and you're done. However, what is a physician to do when the patient still complains of hypothyroid symptoms? What is a physician to do when the patient insists on taking more thyroid, but the TSH is already suppressed? Dr. Stimler of the American Thyroid Association firmly states that if the TSH is normal, then the low thyroid symptoms are due to something else—and not thyroid. Now what is a physician to do if another cause can’t be found and the only treatment that is successful is more thyroid? The answer is simply to prescribe more thyroid. Dr. Rouzier reviews lab tests used in evaluating thyroid function as well as a literature review demonstrating support for optimizing thyroid function for both health and well-being. In our experience, a multitude of symptoms improve when thyroid is optimized in spite of baseline euthyroid lab tests.

Antioxidants for Optimum Health
Joseph McWherter, M.D.
Chairman of Conference Planning Committee, Age Management Medicine Group
Private Practice, Colleyville, TX
Antioxidants are a class of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals that offer protection against the oxidative damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules) that is a byproduct of metabolism. If it weren’t for the body's production of antioxidants, we would all be dead tomorrow. However exercise and several other stressors increase the need for antioxidants, often more than the body can generate, creating the need for antioxidant intake via food and supplements. As we age, our ability to combat free radical production wanes. Not surprisingly, many of the diseases we associate with old age can be attributed to damage caused by excess free radical production. Current evidence shows that antioxidants from both diet and supplementation can reduce the risk of free radical damage—and further reveals why antioxidants should be included in any comprehensive patient treatment program.

2:00 pm - 2:45 pm
Nutritional & Nutraceutical Options as Alternative to Statins
Victor H. Shabanah, M.D.
Medical Director, AAG Health, Aventura, FL
Statins have been used for well over a decade for the treatment of elevated cholesterol and the treatment/prevention of cardiovascular disease. Over the past few years, there has been increasing evidence that Statin drugs—although an effective treatment for hypercholesterolemia—do have side effects.  Nutritional and nutraceutical options may offer clinicians an alternative, nonpharmaceutical treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Dr. Shabanah identifies those options and discusses their evidence-based effectiveness and practical use.
